Chobani Plans to Open Nation’s Largest Dairy Facility in New York

There are big moves happening in the world of dairy—and they’re happening right here in New York.

Chobani just announced plans to build a $1.2 billion facility in Rome, New York, that’s poised to become the largest natural food production facility in the country. This massive expansion will span over a million square feet and is expected to process more than a billion pounds of dairy products each year. This is a massive leap forward for Chobani and it’s a defining moment for New York state’s entire dairy sector.

The new plant will bring 1,000 new jobs to the Mohawk Valley, nearly doubling Chobani’s workforce in New York and deepening its roots in a state that’s long been central to the company’s story. In many ways, this is a homecoming. Chobani launched in upstate New York back in 2005, and with this investment, it’s reaffirming its commitment to local communities, regional farms, and the future of food.

For New York’s dairy farmers, this is especially good news. Once operational, the facility will process over 12 million pounds of milk per day—creating significant opportunities for local farms to grow and thrive. From family-run operations to large-scale producers, this demand strengthens the backbone of our state’s largest agricultural industry.

It also helps cement New York’s place as the country’s leading producer of yogurt and a powerhouse in dairy manufacturing. With nearly 3,000 dairy farms and approximately 200 processing facilities, our state already sets the bar. But investments like this raise it even higher.

The opening of Chobani’s new facility is a signal to farmers, workers, and communities across the state that New York’s dairy future is expansive, inclusive, and built to last. Chobani’s plans include workforce development opportunities that will focus on underserved populations, ensuring that the benefits of this growth ripple across the region.

At New York Dairy, we’re proud to celebrate this milestone. This investment strengthens our state’s role as a national dairy leader and creates meaningful opportunities for farms, families, and the future of dairy production in New York.
