The Program Helping New York Dairy Farms Thrive
Behind every glass of New York milk is more than a farm family and a herd of cows. There's also a network of researchers, educators, and specialists working behind the scenes, helping farmers solve problems, make better decisions, and build operations that can last for generations.
At the center of much of that work is the Cornell PRO-DAIRY Program.
What Is PRO-DAIRY?
Based at Cornell University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, PRO-DAIRY has been dedicated to one mission since 1988: strengthening New York's dairy industry through applied research and education. For more than 35 years, the program has worked alongside farmers, cooperatives, and agricultural professionals across the state to make sure New York dairy stays competitive, sustainable, and strong.
The program's reach is wide. PRO-DAIRY specialists work directly with dairy producers, agribusiness professionals, and farm employees on issues that matter most to the day-to-day success of a dairy operation. From managing herd health and nutrition to planning farm facilities and protecting natural resources, PRO-DAIRY brings practical, research-backed guidance to farms of all sizes across New York.
Research That Works on the Farm
What sets PRO-DAIRY apart is its commitment to applied research that leads to real, measurable improvements on New York dairy farms.
At the Cornell University Ruminant Center, a commercial-scale dairy farm located about 15 miles from Cornell's Ithaca campus, researchers are studying every aspect of the dairy system. Sensors monitor cow health and behavior. Feed trials test new nutrition strategies. Manure management systems are evaluated for environmental impact. The result is a living, working laboratory where questions get answered before new practices ever reach a farmer's barn.
That connection between research and real-world application is exactly what New York's dairy industry needs. When challenges arise, whether it's improving feed efficiency, reducing environmental footprint, or supporting animal well-being, PRO-DAIRY's team is already at work finding solutions grounded in science.
Supporting Farms From Every Angle
PRO-DAIRY's programming spans the full range of what it takes to run a successful dairy farm today. On the business side, the Dairy Farm Business Summary and Analysis Program gives producers the financial tools they need to understand how their operation is performing and where improvements can be made. Good farm management starts with good information, and this program helps farmers track performance, set goals, and make confident decisions about the future.
The Dairy Advancement Program, developed in partnership with the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, offers farms direct support for business planning, operational improvements, and environmental stewardship. Since its launch, the program has helped hundreds of small and mid-size New York dairy farms invest in their long-term viability.
PRO-DAIRY also addresses environmental management and nutrient planning, helping farms manage manure responsibly, protect waterways, and meet regulatory requirements in ways that also improve farm efficiency.
Education That Reaches Thousands
Research only goes so far if it stays in a lab. PRO-DAIRY's extension and education work ensures that new knowledge reaches the people who need it most. Through webinars offered in both English and Spanish, a monthly podcast series, online courses, and in-person training programs, PRO-DAIRY connects dairy producers and agribusiness professionals with the latest information on herd health, crop management, farm technology, and more. Nearly 5,000 farm employees and dairy professionals access PRO-DAIRY's educational content each year, and the reach continues to grow.
The program also looks ahead to the next generation. Youth education programs help young people develop an understanding of careers in dairy and agriculture. They build awareness and enthusiasm for an industry that will need skilled, passionate people for decades to come.
A Partnership That Strengthens the Whole State
PRO-DAIRY doesn't work alone. Its impact is multiplied through strong partnerships with Cornell Cooperative Extension, state agencies, agribusiness professionals, and farm organizations across New York. That network of collaboration is part of what makes the program so effective, and part of why New York's dairy community is widely regarded as one of the most supported and well-resourced in the country.
New York ranks among the top dairy-producing states in the nation, and that standing is no accident. It reflects the work of farm families, but also the research, education, and on-the-ground support from programs like PRO-DAIRY.
The Impact of the Cornell PRO-DAIRY Program
Most people who reach for a carton of milk or a container of yogurt don't think about the research that went into producing it. They don't think about the farm business analysis that helped a family operation stay afloat through a difficult year, or the nutrient management plan that protected a local stream, or the webinar that helped a new farm manager troubleshoot a herd health issue.
But all of that work is happening, consistently, carefully, and in service of the farms and communities that make New York dairy what it is. Cornell PRO-DAIRY is one of the forces behind a thriving industry, and for New York dairy farmers, it's a resource worth knowing about.
